Had a great time in Davis Mountains State park during the Veterans Day weekend of 2023. I got to spend a couple of nights camping and backpacking with my sons and a bunch of Texas-based backpacking YouTube content creators. This is a really cool group of people, and I've been fortunate to have met them through YouTube!
The trip had been planned for months, but unfortunately a cold front moved in that same weekend. Conditions were cold and wet, but a day on trail is better than a day in the office; and the awesome company made it good fun despite the lackluster conditions.
I held out hope that there would be a break in cloud cover for some astrolandscape work, alas such was not the case. However, the dew soaked surroundings made for amazing macro shots and the fall colors made autumn come alive!
The cold and wet conditions were worth toughing out though, on the morning of day 3 there was a break in the weather at sunrise. From the Limpia Creek vista we were looking upon a low fog as it rolled in and surrounded distant mountaintops like an angry ocean. Words can't describe the feeling, but it wasn't long before the fog swamped us and we were once again cold and wet.
On this trip, we explored the Limpia Creek, Seep, and Sheep Pen Canyon loop trails. Davis Mountains State Park was amazing, and I look forward to going back again!
